There seems to be no better time than the present to do a touch of spring-cleaning. It’s one of those ideal situations when what doesn’t get finished today can still be continued tomorrow, and possibly the day after that. Cleaning out is not just about de-cluttering but is also known to have notable psychological and mental wellness benefits. Which is not to say it’s easy. It can be a very emotional process.
Let’s face it, parting with that shirt you haven’t worn in two years because of the eternal “what if?” requires quite a bit of discipline.

I’ve been going through some old boxes that have been tucked up in the cupboard for years. My goodness, the number of childhood bits and bobs that I’ve held on to! This includes a soap dispenser which now contains an ample amount of now radioactive yellow-coloured, SUPER liquid, liquid soap. I still haven’t thrown it out but I’m equally frustrated that I’ve held on to it. It is no longer useful and may even be a biohazard.
When going through your various collections and cupboard-stored goodies, ask yourself a few questions. That old tea set you inherited from a family member – is it better in pristine condition on a shelf in the cupboard or used and enjoyed for which it was designed? The same goes for special candles and soap.
When looking at stored objects, do they make you sad? Are you keeping them out of obligation? Is it better stored or will it be greatly appreciated and enjoyed by someone who isn’t in such a fortunate position to own such a thing? Those old craft supplies and half-used pencil crayons from your colouring-in phase, might a disadvantaged school make good use of them? Might another child find great joy in old forgotten toys your children no longer play with? Perhaps a charity box (or packet) is useful, one in which can be placed those belongings that a charity could sell to make money to support people and animals in need?
Absolutely, cleaning out is a difficult process. It may be a physical one but it is also an emotional one. Ultimately you get to decide, you don’t need to part with anything you don’t want to and you have your reasons for keeping things. Ultimately you know what fills you up or empties you.
